TV Broadband
Everyone loves TV. We watch it all the time. For the entire history of television, channels have been served up to the public over the airwaves or through specialized delivery services such as cable television or Subscriber satellite services.
There are many providers that offer some form of Broadband television. Not all offer the same programming or services.
The most popular of these has been cable television. In this instance, television channels negotiate prices with the cable television provider to allow certain channels to be used by the cable television provider. The cable provider then packages these channels and sells the rights to view them to the cable subscribers. The subscribers can generally choose a package that gives them a group of channels for one price. Some of the channels in ha package may appeal to certain customers, while others may not. Satellite services work in much the same way. Over the air channels are transmitted by the broadcasters themselves and available freely as long as you have antennae that can receive the signal. This is the major limitation of over the air transmission. The power of the transmitter limits the range at which the signal can be received. If you live in a metro area, you may have access to many over the air channels. However, in much of rural America, this limits most too only a few channels that are close enough to them physically receive the over the air broadcast.
Broadband TV is a relative newcomer to the television distribution market. It relies on using the existing broadband connection of a home to transfer digital television channels over the internet’s IP network. These are usually not run by the larger and more entrenched television providers. However, the method for acquiring the television programming remains the same. The provider comes to an agreement with the media owner allowing them to offer a number of channels or specific program material through the broadband service. These services often offer the ability to watch television on mobile devices such as laptops or even smart phones as well as the ability to pause live TV much like the Satellite and optional services from the cable providers. Another benefit of this is that you essentially take your television service with you. Anywhere there is a broadband connection, you can logon to your provider and watch TV shows on your mobile device.
What To Look For In Broadband Television?
There are many providers that offer some form of Broadband television. Not all offer the same programming or services. The first thing to look for is the pricing structure. Many of them offer tiered packages similar to the cable providers along with various a la carte options allowing you to watch a specific television show for a certain amount of money. The cost of both the packages and the a la carte viewings vary greatly. Another thing to watch for is what programming is actually available. Unfortunately, due to a current content war many content creators are making specific deals with individual content providers. This may mean that the channel or shows that you want to watch are only available on one broadband television company and not on others. Quality and features should be given consideration as well. The resolution of the incoming signal will vary among providers. For HD, the minimum acceptable should be a 720p signal. Some, however, offer up to 1080p for certain programming. On a small, mobile device, the resolution is likely not a major concern, but lower quality video streams will make themselves apparent on larger screens such as those found in most living rooms. The same applies to the audio side of things. While low bit rate, stereo 2 channel audio is fine for your Smartphone or even a laptop, if you have a home theater, you will want to ensure that the provider offers a surround sound mode. Even within surround sound, there are many different types of surround sound available and this should be researched to meet your specific needs.
What Type Of Person Would Want To Use Broadband Television?
There are many people that would benefit or enjoy the features that broadband television offers. The flexibility of being able to watch your TV anywhere is especially enticing to those who travel or spend a large amount of time away from their primary viewing location. Those to who the price of Cable programming is prohibitive will often also find that some of the more basic broadband television packages are more affordable than those offered by traditional delivery methods. Families that want a wide variety of television shows on demand are especially drawn to broadband television as they can play a program for the kids and when it’s over switch to their favorite series or movie. People with a large number of mobile devices may find they enjoy watching a program on their tablet while in bed, or on their smart phone while on break at work. This kind of versatility can only be found with broadband television.
Where Are Some Good Places To Start Looking Online For Broadband Television?
There are many different providers to choose from when shopping for broadband television. There are too many to list here, but some good places to start that will give you ideas of the types of services that are available are:
www.netflix.com - This is one of the largest online broadband television providers. They offer packages ranging from streaming only to streaming with the addition of Blu Ray Rentals. Many of their television shows are presented in surround sound as well, though this can vary depending on the device it is being played back on.
www.apple.com - is now offering broadband television shows over their iTunes™ store. Rather than a subscription, they offer only a la carte rental or purchase of specific shows.
